Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander attempted zero free throws in an NBA game for the first time since 2021.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who is second in the league for free throw attempts with 8.8 per game, failed to reach the charity stripe once during his team's 126-99 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I don't know. I didn't get fouled. I don't know. I don't think that necessarily needs to change. I don't know how many [points] I had tonight, but I felt good offensively. I don't think we lost because I didn't shoot free throws, and I'm all about trying to win. So I don't think that necessarily needs to change,” said Gilgeous-Alexander.
The 26-year-old has been subject to criticism from fans accusing him of “foul-baiting,” while also being the target of chants such as “free throw merchant” during games.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished the game with 26 points and nine assists as his team suffered back-to-back defeats for just the second time this season.
The Lakers shot 50% from behind the three-point line to register their second victory in a row and move to 48-30 on the season and stay third in the Western Conference.
The Thunder and Lakers will face off at the Paycom Center again on April 8 as Oklahoma City, who sit at 64-14 for the campaign, look to secure the top record in the NBA.
